What's Hap-pinning Wednesday: Life Lately

Happy Wednesday, y'all! As always, I'm linking up with Jenn and Jessi today, and I'm going to share a little bit about what we've been up to.

+ I'm going to be really honest here. It's been a tough week. Just a lot of stuff going on and I'm just emotionally exhausted. Why do I say this? Because I try to be real with y'all. I'm in no way, shape or form perfect, and I think that so many times, people put on this face and try to pretend that everything is perfect when, in all actuality, they're inwardly struggling. So all of that to say, I'm having a hard time. This time of year can be great, but it can also be filled with a lot of added -- and might I say unnecessary -- stress, hurt and anger. So if you feel like me and feel like you're faking the Christmas spirit just a little bit, just know you're not alone. And it's okay. This week I've just had to put a fake smile on my face and pretend...and I'm hoping that if my face smiles just a bit, perhaps my spirit will follow.

+ So, all of that said, Walker had his MDO "Baby Jesus Party" at school yesterday, and it was the cutest thing ever: homemade reindeer shirts, reading the Nativity story, making a craft, frosting sugar cookies and performing "Jingle Bells." It was completely precious. Goofy smile and all.

+ Yesterday, Knox said his first word: "Mama!" I practically melted into a puddle of mush on my kitchen floor when I heard it. Walker's first word was "Dada," so I'm especially loving that sweet Knox said "Mama" first. ;)

+ I had grand plans to do a blog post about my favorite children's Christmas books, but then this week happened and those plans went out the window. So, I'm just going to give you a list of my favorites because there's totally still time to order these on Amazon Prime and have them here to read with your littles over the next week!

My favorites are: "Christmas in the Manger," "Little Golden Book of Christmas Favorites," "The Berenstain Bears: The Very First Christmas," "Corduroy's Christmas Surprise," "The Night Before Christmas...In Texas, That Is," "The Sweet Smell of Christmas," "Little Blue Truck's Christmas," "Llama Llama Holiday Drama," and of course, "The Night Before Christmas."

Sorry there's no official post on this. Ball dropped.

+ I finally ordered a new coat for myself, and it was most definitely affordable -- Old Navy for the win! -- and I got an extra 40% off, to boot! I love a good deal and am definitely not ashamed to admit that I found one. I'm all about affordability! And, since we live in Texas and it's not often we wear a big, heavy coat, Walker saw me with it on the other day and said, "Mommy, what's THAT?!" The poor child hasn't seen his mother in one in recent memory {because I was pregnant and couldn't fit in mine last winter} and didn't know why I was wearing a coat to match his. Ha!

+ After seeing a pattern in Walker's behavior after watching TV, we have decided to cut it out and only use it as a reward system. If he listens and obeys well all day, he can watch one episode of "Curious George" or "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" before bedtime. I know it's extreme, but I had gotten into a bad habit of letting him watch a lot more TV than normal when Knox was born, and his attitude was really taking a big, negative, noticeable hit from it. And let me tell you, after just 2.5 days of this system, I can't tell you the complete 180* difference we have noticed in his behavior. Any time he has asked to watch a show, I just suggest a puzzle or an activity and he forgets completely about it. So, I'm praying this sticks and continues, because I like his attitude a lot better this way!

I hope y'all have a great Wednesday!

  1. I'm glad that you've figured out a positive way to deal with Walker's behavior--MAMA WIN!!!! And the fact that Knox said Mama--another win! Try not to let the other stress get to you (I know it's WAY easier said than done), and know that you have a gorgeous family, including a husband who loves and supports you, and two littles who adore the heck out of you. Keep looking for the positives, and smiling :)

  3. I love that knox may have just made your month by saying mama first!! So glad you have found something to curb Walker's attitude - he's such a great boy and I love all the sweet videos of him! xo, Biana -BlovedBoston

  4. I feel you, sister. I'm expecting our first baby a month from today, so Christmas seems very... odd to me this year. I'm crazy-stressed at work trying to line things up for maternity leave, I'm struggling with missing my family and not seeing them on the actual Christmas holiday (they live in Texas but will be traveling to Boston to be with us when the baby is born), and so much LIFE has been happening that it's been tricky (and sometimes impossible) to just grin and act like all is good. So sending you hugs and a high-five for not sugarcoating it and being open about things - I bet there are a lot more readers who can identify with what you're feeling right now than you might think. And that whole smiling and hoping your spirit follows works - I've been practicing myself recently :)

  8. I need a new winter coat, and it's getting really cold so I need to get on that ASAP. I'll have to check out Old Navy. I do love them!!

Aw, that's so sweet that Knox said "mama" as his first word. A lot of kids do start with dad, so that's awesome!

  9. I'm sorry you're struggling a little bit this year! For some reason, this season this year has been rough and it's not anything big or awful for us in particular, just hard! I'll be praying :) That's so fascinating about Walker and TV! I know my mom wouldn't let us watch sassy shows or movies because we'd get an attitude lol! We have friends who do the same thing and it works really well :)

  11. I hate hearing this about your week and stress level and I can assure you we are probably going through some of the same things - feel free to text me as always! Also, good idea on the tv thing - Andi loves her cartoons and sometimes I wonder if I'm letting her watch too much? I'll definitely be checking out some of those books and can I just say how blown away I was with the plate you snapped today? Absolutely presh!!!!!!
