What's Hap-pinning Wednesday: Hospital Bag Essentials for Mom & Baby

When I was packing my hospital bag for Walker two years ago, I'll readily admit that I overpacked. I'm an over-packer by nature, and this was no exception. I'd never had a baby before (duh), so I wasn't sure of what the hospital provided for me or for him, and I threw a bunch of stuff in my bag that I didn't end up using.

This time around, I plan to be a lot more minimalistic in my approach to packing for the hospital. (I think I'm already sensing a pattern for #secondchild here…) I'm having Baby Boy #2 in the same hospital that I delivered Walker in, so I'm familiar with them and what they do and don't provide.

Because I'm super Type A, my hospital bag is already packed and ready to go -- save for the things like cosmetics, toothbrush, phone charger, etc. (And that stuff is listed out in the "Notes" section of my iPhone in case I go into labor at home and need to reference it!)

Our hospital provides diapers, wipes, hairbrush, a swaddling blanket, white infant shirt, infant cap, and nasal aspirator/bowl for babies; maxi pads, big "underwear," and Lanolin for moms; and things like bath towels, wash cloths, etc. for mom and dad. And even though you pay out the whazoo for it, I like to just take the pain medication and/or stool softeners the hospital provides as I need them and not pack them.

So here are my hospital bag essentials for mom and baby with the full list below:

*Full List:
For Mom:
-Driver's license
-Insurance card(s)
-Proof of payments for OB (if necessary)
-Hospital registration paperwork
-Folder to keep documents in (You'll have a lot to go home with!)
-Nursing bra (These are my favorite!)
-Cheap flip-flops for shower (I buy the cheapies at Old Navy and just toss them when I get home)
-Non-skid slippers or socks (These slippers are my fave!)
-Pajamas (I like long-sleeved sets that button; they're warm for the cold hospital & easy to nurse in)
-Cozy robe
-Underwear (briefs -- trust me, you'll need them…for a while)
-Outfit to go home in (I like these maternity pants and this comfy maternity shirt
-Cosmetics and toiletries (I like to bring travel-sized stuff to eliminate the bulk)
-Ponytail holders/bobby pins
-Chapstick
-Pillow in a bright pillowcase (so you don't forget it when you're leaving)
-Phone charger
-Earplugs and/or sleep mask (if you're a light sleeper)
-Boppy or equivalent nursing pillow
-Gifts for nurses (if you desire)

For Dad:
-Driver's license
-Blankets & pillow (in a bright pillowcase) for the hospital "bed"
-Toiletries (I like to bring travel-sized stuff to eliminate the bulk)
-Phone charger
-Earplugs and/or sleep mask (if he's a light sleeper)
-Snacks and bottled water (and change for the vending machines, if needed)
-Change of clothes, shoes
-Cheap flip-flops for shower

For Baby:
-1-2 long-sleeved, footed sleepers (I love these
-Hat (This is what Walker wore and what Baby Boy #2 will wear, too)
-Coming home outfit
-Sleep sack (if your hospital doesn't provide one)
-Pacifiers (if you/your hospital are pro-paci)
-Mittens
-Swaddle blankets (if you don't want to use the hospital's)
-Pages from baby book (for footprints/handprints and for first visitors to sign)
-Carseat
-Gift for sibling from baby (if necessary)
