What's Up Wednesday: September 2015

Happy Wednesday! Holy cow, y'all, I can't believe it's already the last day of September and October is TOMORROW!

I'm joining together with Mel, Shaeffer and Shay for "What's Up Wednesday"…

…to answer the following questions:

So let's get to it!

{1} What We're Eating This Week:
We've been eating a lot of recipes that are in my grandmother's family cookbook, including something called "Thelma's Chicken," one called "Mozell's Meatloaf," and a yummy oven-fried chicken recipe. On the Pinterest side of things, we've had Bowtie Lasagna, which, if you've never made, is super easy and really kid-friendly!

{2} What I'm Reminiscing About:
Our five-year anniversary is next week, so I've been doing a lot of reminiscing about our wedding. Five years went by in the blink of an eye! It's true what they say, "The days are long, but the years are short." I feel like that quote can be attributed to many things, including raising children!

Side note: We were babies!!!

{3} What I'm Loving
Even though this time of the year is super busy for us, I'm loving this season! Fall brings with it so many fun traditions and memories, and I'm loving that Walker is old enough to participate in them this year. From the pumpkin patch, to Halloween, to carnivals, to Thanksgiving, I can't wait for our little guy to experience it this year.

Just for grins, here is Walker last year -- I can't believe how much he's grown!

{4} What We've Been Up To
We have been busy little bees lately! Or, maybe I should say Walker has? His social calendar is fuller than mine! ;)

He started once-weekly Mother's Day Out earlier this month; we've had play dates with friends; Brandon and I got to sneak away for a date night; Walker got a haircut; and we've been busy continuing our little "Tot School!"

{5} What I'm Dreading
I know this probably makes me a horrible person, but I much prefer Thanksgiving to Christmas. Hear me out, though. The best parts about the former holiday is that you get together with family without the added pressure of gift-giving and receiving and making long-hauls to visit family who sometimes get on your nerves. You are just together with family, spending time with each other and eating…not worrying about all that other petty stuff.

So, I guess it's not that I'm "dreading" Christmas itself, but I'm dreading all the petty nonsense that manages to slip its way into the holiday season. ;)

{6} What I'm Working On
Walker has been trying to climb out of his crib for a couple of days now, so I know the big-boy room is going to come soon enough. So, I'm working on some inspiration boards for what I want his room to look like. Not too big, but not too little, either, and definitely a place where he can play. Here are some of my favorites, all from my Pinterest board

{7} What I'm Excited About
Taking Walker to the pumpkin patch next month; carving jack-o-lanterns; dressing him up for Halloween and of course, Halloween candy! Oh! And taking Walker to his very first Baylor Homecoming next month, too! #allthingsfall

{8} What I'm Watching/Reading
We are still heavily into "Friday Night Lights," and I recently started "Gilmore Girls," too. Netflix for the win! And of course, now that all of our fall TV shows are back, those, too! I'm still reading Dr. James Dobson's "The Strong-Willed Child" and am really loving it. I need to go to my local library and see if they have "The Royal We," because I heard it's great!

{9} What I'm Listening To
We are still listening to Walker's favorite CD, of which I wake up singing and have the songs in my dreams. Other than that, my Sirius radio in the car has me jamming to the 90s station quite frequently!

{10} What I'm Wearing
On most days, you can typically find me in my favorite yoga pants and a T-shirt, but I've been trying to wear some non-mom-uniform clothes lately! Unfortunately, I have no pictures to that because I'm not very good at it. Ha!

{11} What I'm Doing This Weekend
This weekend is our friend Brandon's 30th birthday, so his sweet wife is throwing him a party. He is a Texas Tech Red Raider, and we are proud Baylor Bears, and the teams happen to be playing each other on Saturday just in time for the party. Here's hoping Baylor tears into Tech! {Please, Baylor, please!}

{12} What I'm Looking Forward to Next Month
Everything fall: taking Walker to the pumpkin patch; Halloween; our five-year anniversary; Baylor Homecoming; celebrating friends' and families' birthdays; and #allthingsfall.

*Bonus Question: What is My Favorite Halloween Tradition:
Since we've been married, I make homemade baked potato soup, we carve pumpkins while listening to spooky Halloween music, and we watch creepy Halloween movies on TV. It's such a fun tradition that I hope to continue on with Walker and our future kids!

*I'm also linking up with Jessi and Jenn today for "What's Happ-'pinning' Wednesday!"

Walker is 20 Months!

Walker, you are exactly 20 months old today and my mama heart can't quite believe that you're closer to two years old than one. You're growing too fast for our liking, sweet boy!

Walker is 29 pounds and still such a sweet little boy. I'm truly loving getting to be home with him every day and spending more and more time with him.

He is such a "Chatty Cathy" and really repeats everything we say these days. A few weeks ago, our crazy cat, Oliver, was whining to go outside and I said, exasperated, "Oliver, you're a nut!" Walker was sitting at the breakfast table and said, "Nut!" and pointed to Oliver. I was half-mortified, half-tickled. He repeats everything! His vocabulary has expanded so much that I can't even keep track of everything he says, but we our recent favorites are "Go Dog, Go!" which sounds like, "Doe dog doe!", "Llama Llama" {after the books}, which sounds like, "Lana yana" and "Hop on Pop," which sounds like, "Pop on Pop." It's so sweet.

He has so much energy and wears me out! He loves to play outside, swim, run, play chase, run some more, color outside with chalk, be in his little Gymboree Play & Music class, go to his once-a-week Mother's Day Out "school," and generally just be an active toddler boy. I'm dreading winter when it will be too cold to play outside because I know he will be devastated. He constantly goes to the back door and says, "Outside?" He loves being out there. My favorite times lately have been in the mornings when it's cool. He can barely finish his breakfast before he's making a run for the back door…without any pants, no less!

His favorite toys right now are any books {"Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?", "Go Dog, Go!", "Roadwork" and "Llama Llama Misses Mama" are quite high on his list of late}; playing with puzzles {currently this one is his favorite}; his car; his jungle gym; any type of ball; and any sort of slide. He also loves this CD and we can't be in the car with him without listening to it on repeat!

He is still a great eater! {I'm terrified of what his appetite will be when he's a teenager.} He eats whatever we eat for lunch and dinner, but his favorite things to eat are cheese cubes, applesauce, graham crackers, Goldfish, PB&J, sweet potatoes, broccoli/carrot veggie mix, watermelon and blue corn tortilla chips.

He now has 11 teeth, and I'm seeing his K-9's and another set of molars pop through.

He is in size 5 diapers for day and overnight. He's in 24 months and 2T clothes, and 2T pajamas. He wears a size 6 shoe.

As usual, he's a great sleeper! He goes to bed at 7:30 p.m. and sleeps until 7 a.m. {sometimes a little later}, and takes one nap around 12:30 p.m. that lasts anywhere from 2-3 p.m.

He absolutely adores Brandon, and seeing him literally jump up and down when he walks through the door in the evenings is priceless. He'll follow him back to our room so he can change clothes and the entire time, Walker is just yelling, "Daddy! Daaaaa-ddyyyy! DADDY!" It makes me smile every time I hear it.

Every morning when he wakes up, he points to his rocking chair and says, "Rock?" that sounds like, "Wok?" It melts my heart to just sit there in the mornings, rocking my sweet baby and reading the book we read the night before.

Walker is also a very big animal lover and would kiss every animal if we'd let him. I'll purposely take him to PetsMart with me to get more food for Oliver just so we can stop and look at all the animals.

So there you have a brief overview of our precious little guy!

We love you to the moon and back, Walker!

Weekending: A Fire, Family Time + Football

Happy Monday! I can't believe it's the last one of September!

-ONE-
We spent Friday morning at a local splash pad/playground and lunch at Chick-fil-A with a friend and her little girl. Only in Texas can you go to a splash pad in late September!

Brandon got home from his week-long business trip, and boy, was I happy to see him!

Since he eats out every meal for the week he's gone, I always make a home-cooked meal the night he gets home. I was making this recipe, and I always use store-bought tostadas, because seriously -- who has time to make their own?

Anyway, I had them on the broil function to get them a little brown before I put the tostada ingredients on them and broiled the cheese on top. Well, I got to talking to Brandon and all of a sudden I smelled something burning. I opened the oven to the tostadas on fire -- a full-fledged fire, y'all. I was freaking out, but I remembered that we had a fire extinguisher in our pantry for instances such as these. Well, of course I had no earthly idea how to actually open said fire extinguisher {since it was brand new} and had a moment of panic. I tossed the fire extinguisher to Brandon, who immediately pulled the safety tab and extinguished the fire. {My dad, who is a volunteer fireman, would shake his head at me for not knowing how to use a fire extinguisher!}

As you can see from the ash, it was pretty significant! I'm just thankful that we had a fire extinguisher in our house; that Brandon was home when it happened; and we didn't have anything worse than a huge mess to clean up in the oven and surrounding area. So, a little PSA: get a fire extinguisher in your kitchen if you don't have one already!!

-SATURDAY-
I woke up to breakfast in bed and Walker sleeping in until 7:50 a.m.! He normally sleeps from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., so those extra 50 minutes were a welcomed surprise. Brandon and I ate breakfast in bed, watched the news and caught up on social media. {You know you're adults when…}

Later that morning, we made a trip to Home Depot to get some fertilizer, soil and a few more knockout rose bushes for the front yard to prepare it for fall. {Clearly both boys weren't pleased with the picture-taking…!}

Then, we ran over to Target so I could get a storage bin for the clothes Walker's outgrowing, and of course Brandon spotted a kid-sized soccer ball and goal, and we left Target with that. And Brandon says I spoil Walker…ha! ;)

I picked up this candle from Target while we were there, and y'all, it smells amazing! It's like a Bath & Body Works candle, but only cost $8 at my store!

We watched the Baylor game, of course, and got things done around the house afterward. I started to cook dinner and came outside to Brandon giving Walker a little soccer lesson. It melted my heart!

My aunt joined us for dinner, and she brought her sweet old dog, Abby, so Walker could play with her. Of course, our little animal-lover loved that and kept kissing her over and over!

-SUNDAY-
We went to church, and since the Cowboys had a noon game, our friends Brandon and Kimmie {and their daughter Emily} came over with pizza to watch it with us. It was so good to see and catch up with our friends! {And you know you're good friends when you fall asleep on the couch in the middle of the game when they're over. Ha!}

Walker absolutely loves their daughter, Emily, and kept rubbing her head, kissing her and saying, "baby, baby!"

For dinner, I decided to make my "Cheater Chicken Pot Pie," which is probably one of the best, easiest "homemade" chicken pot pie recipes ever.

I found a wonderful chicken hack in my local Kroger about a year ago: Del Real Shredded Chicken. Literally, all you do is put it in the microwave to warm it and you have shredded chicken for any recipe! No boiling, cooling and shredding chicken for a recipe! So, that's what I use for this recipe. And, you can totally use on-brand ingredients, but I'm cheap and use Kroger brand ingredients and this tastes just the same.

Here's the {super easy} recipe if you're interested!

Yum! My favorite part is the lightly browned crust, because, duh. #carbs

I hope y'all have a great week!

Friday!

Happy, Happy Friday! This has been a week, so I'm thankful the weekend is finally here!

Before I get started, I just wanted to wish a "Happy Birthday" to my beautiful mom! We love you, Foxy!

-ONE-
It's still feeling like early summer here in Texas, with temperatures into the high 80s and low 90s each day. I know I've mentioned this over…and over…and over again, but y'all: I AM SO READY FOR FALL. I even put out some mums and my monogrammed pumpkin this week in hopes it would help the temperatures fall. {No pun intended. Or maybe?}

So to all of you wearing cute scarves, jackets and going to the pumpkin patch, I am jealous of you!

-TWO-
After going up in the attic to get said fall d├ęcor, I found a couple of toys Walker seemed to be "over" a few months ago, but that I kept on hand for future kiddos. He has a newfound relationship with this cheapie shape sorter and his V-Tech sit-to-stand walker. I've decided I'm not buying anymore toys; I'm just going to put some away for a while and bring them back out again! {But some of his other recent favorites are this helicopter and this train, which, by the way, hurts like you-know-what when you step on it barefoot.}

-THREE-
Old Navy has really been killing it with their sales lately! I bought Walker a ton of stuff with their recent 40% off sale, and also with their recent 50% off kids and baby sale. Of course, as what happens when you become a parent, you buy more for your children than for yourself {or at least I do!} and I forget to buy stuff for me! So, I'm going to go back to good ol' Old Navy next week while Walker is at Mother's Day Out and pick myself up a few goodies. I've got my eye on these:

And of course…

-FOUR-
The majority of my fall TV shows came back this week! "Modern Family" cracked me up; did any of y'all watch it? I'm anxiously awaiting "Blood & Oil" on Sunday! Chace Crawford? Yes, please!

-FIVE-
Brandon has been out of town on business since Sunday {yes, he missed that epic Cowboys game!} and we are so happy he's coming home today. Walker kept saying all week: "Daddy work?" It broke my heart every time!

We have big plans to do nothing this weekend; our last one of these for a while because every. single. weekend in October is jam-packed, as our Octobers tend to be. We're looking forward to watching lots of football, eating lots of yummy food and spending some good family time together before the madness of the next month!
