What to Wear Wednesday: Dressing for a Fall Wedding

Unless you’re the bride, dressing for a wedding is definitely a difficult task. Can you wear black? {My answer: yes.} Is wearing white still passé? {My answer: A resounding yes.} I just had a baby. What in the world do I put on my body? {My answer: Read below; thanks to Brittany for her suggestion for this month’s WTTW!}

It’s never easy to find that dress. And if you’re like me, you want to buy something you’re going to be able to wear over and over again – not spend money on something that will sit in your closet forever. {And no, I’m not talking about bridesmaid’s dresses…although I could author a book on that subject!}

Gentel and I are back this month to discuss just that: what to wear to a wedding. But most importantly, what to wear to a fall wedding!

I got married in the fall {October 9, to be exact} for the sole purpose that fall is absolutely gorgeous in Texas. It might not last long – we Texans like to joke that we have two seasons: summer and winter – but it’s beautiful while it’s here. On my wedding day, it was cool in the morning, warmed up to around 80* or so by mid-afternoon and cooled back down at night. But the best part? NO HUMIDITY!

So, at least in Texas, we can get away with bare legs in the fall. But I always like to carry a pashmina, shawl or light jacket with me because, as I mentioned, it can get a little chilly at night ‘round these parts! I’m thankful that scarves are in right now, too, because you can pair them with any outfit and it can completely change it.

I’ve mentioned it time and time again, but I love Loft and Nordstrom for good staple pieces. I’m definitely not one to shop at places like Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue on the regular; sorry, I’m just not that girl! But, those places do have good options if your budget is a bit higher than mine. ;) {The best part about Nordstrom's website is they completely take the guess work out of it for you: “Wedding Guest” is a filter option when you click on “Dresses.” How’s that for easy?}

To answer my questions above:
  • I completely love black for any season, but especially fall and winter. It’s slimming, looks good on any skin tone and can easily be dressed up or down. Bonus? You can very likely wear many black dresses to work or to another event just by changing your shoes and/or accessories.
  • I am old school – and from the South – and think the bride should have her day and be the only one wearing white to her wedding. {Unless you’re the Duchess of Cambridge and have your sister wearing a white bridesmaid’s dress!} To me, white is a big no-no and I would never do that to a bride.
  • If you’re nursing, just had a baby or are pregnant, I’m so thankful that flowy items are in style right now. Non-maternity tunics with a maternity pencil skirt; tunic dresses; non-maternity shirtdresses – there are so many options that aren’t a tight bandage skirt or zip-up dress. {As an aside, if you’re nursing, definitely don’t wear a dress! I made that mistake and had to sit bare-butt to pump and was terrified someone would walk in on me. Talk about mortifying…and cold!}

If I were going to a wedding this fall, here would be dresses I would pick out, because yes, I find any excuse to wear a dress these days since I’m constantly chasing after a busy toddler!

However, another good option is Rent the Runway. If you don’t want to buy a dress and would rather wear it once and send it back – I mean, why didn’t I come up with this idea? – then Rent the Runway is for you. If you haven’t heard of it, let me give you a quick synopsis: Rent the Runway is an online service that provides designer dress and accessory rentals. We’re talking Vera Wang, Carolina Herrera, Badgley Mischka and more. Simple enough, right?

Here are my current Rent the Runway favorites:

Are you going to any fall weddings this year? If so, what are you wearing?

As a reminder, the first Wednesday of the month, Gentel and I will be posting style ideas for a specific event. We plan to do a mix of both special events and everyday occasions, from how to mix prints or what to wear to a wedding {like today!}. Is there a particular look you want ideas on styling? Leave us a comment or shoot either of us an email; we are more than happy to incorporate it!

  1. I'm going to a fall black-tie optional wedding and have rented two "simple" gowns from RTR. Excited to see which one works!

  2. Our wedding season is just starting with the first one this weekend – I always find myself wearing black to weddings! I don’t think white works either – my dress has a couple touches of white in it this weekend and I was even nervous about that, ha!
