What to Wear Wednesday: Travel Fashion

Gentel and I are back for another month of “What to Wear Wednesday,” and just off the tail-end of my vacation and gearing up for Gentel’s, we wanted to discuss travel fashion.

I have a love/hate relationship with traveling. I love actually being there and then being home, but I hate the in-between stage. You know, actually getting there on a plane, train or automobile? As much as I wish I could travel like women did in the 1950s in a full outfit – including a dress, hat and gloves – I’m more on the comfortability side of things.

However, I’m also not one of those who dresses like she’s homeless on a plane. {Which, for the record, drives me crazy.} You can look comfortable without looking homeless! We’ve all seen our fair share of bikini tops, hoodies, and I’ve even seen a bride still wearing her crown/veil from her wedding the day before {yikes!}. I’ll never look like Victoria Beckham when I travel, but I also don’t want to look like I couldn’t give a lick, either.

My favorite things to wear are always pants {it’s cold on a plane!}; a flowy top for added comfort; and shoes that can be slipped on and off easily for the security line. I’m definitely one of those people who wears make-up on a plane, even though I know it dries my face out – I don’t know why, I just do. But I do throw my hair up in a bun! Ha!

I always bring an extra change of clothes in my carry-on, of which I stick my purse in. It depends on where we’re traveling, but if it’s a beach vacation, I always put an extra bathing suit, cover-up, underwear, a pair of Nike shorts, a T-shirt, a pair of flip-flops and put all my make-up in there, too, along with that little toothbrush kit I get from my dentist at my bi-yearly checkups that includes a toothbrush, small toothpaste and dental floss. Typically I’ll include a baseball cap, ponytail holders, bobby pins, hand lotion, chapstick, sunglasses, passport {if necessary} and of course, books, magazines, my iPhone and charger! I do all of this because I can’t tell you how many times my husband – who travels on business once a month – has had to deal with his checked bag not making it to his final destination. {He has to check his suitcase since he has to carry on his demo kit from his company.}

What about you? What are your favorite things to wear when you travel or stick in your carry-on?

As a reminder, the first Wednesday of the month, Gentel and I will be posting style ideas for a specific event. We plan to do a mix of both special events and everyday occasions, from how to mix prints or what to wear to a wedding. Is there a particular look you want ideas on styling? Leave us a comment or shoot either of us an email; we are more than happy to incorporate it!

  1. I definitely wear full makeup too, unless it's an overnight flight then I tone it down so I don't feel gross when I wake up. I always crack up at the people in a full on dressed up outfit with heels, but I do wear actual clothes and not pjs! I love wearing leggings and a tunic on overnight flights. Also, please please help with dresses that look good on a postpartum body for a fall wedding!

  2. Love this post! I always wear pants too because I freeze on planes! I also wear makeup too. I just feel gross traveling without at least making myself look decently presentable :)

  3. Our bags didn't arrive for the entire first day of our honeymoon [yes, total nightmare] but luckily we had packed bathing suits in our carry-ons. I will ALWAYS be prepared with my carry-ons for the rest of my life!

  4. Ha, I actually wrote about this in June. Trying to decide what to wear on my 10 hour flight to Greece in two weeks! http://loandbholddc.blogspot.com/2015/06/airport-fashion.html
