What to Wear Wednesday: Swimsuits!

Gentel and I are back for another month of "What to Wear Wednesday" and since it's officially summer (!!!) we are talking swimsuits!

I know most women hate {or perhaps "loathe" or "despise" might be the better words} swimsuit shopping, so hopefully we can offer you some options to make swimsuit shopping painless.

Let's be honest. My body most definitely isn't the same after having a baby. Yes, I'm back down to my pre-pregnancy weight, but my body changed. My boobs aren't as perky, I have a little more fat on my hips than before, and I'm slowly losing that thigh gap. {And that's all okay!} I say all of this to say: ladies, please love your body! Seriously! I know it can be hard -- especially if you've had a baby {or three!} and your body just isn't the same anymore, like mine isn't.

But I promise that swimsuit shopping is much easier if you don't beat yourself up before even stepping foot in a dressing room. Do I stand in front of my bathroom mirror at night, pulling and pinching skin that I wish wasn't on my thighs or arms? YES. I hate that I do that, too. But I always have to remember to embrace my body, because it's the only one I will ever have. And I say that to remind you, too!

So now that that's out of the way, we can get on to the fun stuff: shopping!

For me, I prefer to swimsuit shop online so I can try on at home without that awful dressing room lighting that many stores have. Most retailers offer free shipping and free returns {I'm looking at you, Nordstrom!} which is just like going to the store...but better. {Ahem, Elle Woods. ;) }

I've always had larger boobs, so I've really never been able to successfully pull off those triangle top bikinis that tie around your back and your neck. Yes, I've worn them, but it's not my best look. Now that I've had Walker -- and because I'm older and more conscious of sun on my skin -- I want to cover up just a bit more. Not because I think women should, but because I think I should, and that's how I feel most comfortable at the community pool, at my in-law's pool, at my parents' house on the lake, and on a beach vacation.

I'm so thankful that cute one-pieces are in style right now, and I hope they stick around for a good while. Here are some of my favorite ones:

one || two || three

four || five || six

Gentel and I both love many of the same stores when it comes to purchasing a swimsuit. Those are:

1) Victoria's Secret: I know, I know. There are things on their website I wouldn't be caught dead in, but there are precious suits on there, too! I ordered #4 above {in mint} and absolutely love it. I have found that I do often have to size up one size at V.S., however, so keep that in mind.

2) Target: I purchased two swimsuits from Target this season, mostly because they are a good price point and I'll be wearing them to Jamaica, so if they get lost in airline bagland, it won't be that big of a deal. You can't beat Target's swimsuit selection, either! Keep in mind that many bikinis sold here are sold separately.

3) Nordstrom: Like I mentioned above, free shipping and free returns, no matter the price! Their prices can be at the higher end of the spectrum, but they have great markdowns and their suits are great quality. I would invest in a classic swimsuit from Nordstrom and buy fun and trendy ones from V.S. or Target.

4) Loft: I love Loft, so I was pleasantly surprised when they started carrying swimwear a few years ago. And the best part about Loft is that all of their clothes -- even swimsuits -- run big, so I always have to go one size down. {Loft sure knows how to make a woman feel good about that smaller size on the tag! Ha!}

As a reminder, the first Wednesday of the month, Gentel and I will be posting style ideas for a specific event. We plan to do a mix of both special events and everyday occasions, from how to mix prints or what to wear to a wedding. Is there a particular look you want ideas on styling? Leave us a comment or shoot either of us an email; we are more than happy to incorporate it!

  2. Ditto on Target--love that I can mix and match styles and sizes, and don't get upset if a swimsuit gets snagged or faded (though my only Target swimsuit is going on five years old, ha!). Second Nordstrom too, and Macy's has a lot of the same suits as Nordy but at a cheaper price. Just saved $25 on a top from Macy's that I originally saw at Nordy!
