Our Weekend via Insta

I should be getting ready for my {huge} client event at 12 p.m. today, but...I'm obviously not. This is almost therapeutic...escaping the inevitable, that is.

Here's what we did this weekend:

Meal planned. On a Friday night. PARTY ANIMALS.

I use this meal planner and arrange my grocery list in order of the store to make it easy and quick. {Type A, much?}

I painted my nails bright pink {Essie "Fiesta"}. I always get to late January-early February and am so tired of dark nail polish. I needed a pop of color.

Went to a surprise birthday party for our friend, Kimmie.

Kimmie has Celiac, so I made my very first {and probably only} gluten-free cake. {And cookies and brownies.}

Continued to try out a new church on Sunday morning {we love it!}...

...and I made an awesome salad on Sunday night that I'm at the point of "almost addicted."

{Spring mix, strawberries, goat cheese and pecans with Brianna's French Vinaigrette dressing}

And we got the news last night that my cousin Rebecca {below right} had her baby: a girl! Audrey Kate. I was so happy for them that I cried so many happy tears last night. As my mom said in a text message to me, "Any time a baby is healthy and born to someone you love, it's a good cry."

Rebecca has requested that no photos of Audrey be posted to social media {totally understandable}, so unfortunately I can't share a photo here, but rest assured that she's precious and looks just like her mama!

Happy Week!

On Judgment

I am ridiculously guilty of judging people. Judging the book by its cover, if you know what I mean. Looking at someone and judging their life without fully getting to know them, who they are, what they stand for and what makes them who they are.

Looked at someone and immediately knew we couldn't be friends because she was prettier than me, or he had more money than me, or thought I wasn't good enough for them.

And in turn, I've also been judged for the exact same things.

I have learned a lot of things in my {short} time on this earth, but one of those that really stuck was, "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken." And I've really taken that to heart.

Have you ever seen the movie "Runaway Bride?"  The part where she doesn't even know what kind of eggs she likes? With one guy, it's scrambled. With another its poached, etc.

That used to be me. I didn't know what music I really liked. What decor style was really "me." Where I really liked to shop. And finally, it hit me. I had to be me and like what I liked -- because if I didn't, who was I, really?

I kind of covered it here, but I am who I am. Take me or leave me. I don't deserve to be judged because I drink too much wine, or I don't go to church enough, or because I live in the suburbs, or because I don't make crafts on Saturdays or because my parents may be able to afford nice things.

None of us deserve to be judged. For anything.We need to be exactly who we are and our fellow friends {and women} need to empower each other for that. Not sit back and judge someone for something petty. As the words above say, "Don't someone because they sin differently than you."

I think with blogging, it's really easy for us to judge others and obsess over others. You might really like one blogger's New Year's resolutions and hate another's; you might agree with one blogger cloth diapering her child and think another is stupid for not doing it; you might think one blogger is super woman because she works and still has time for crafting and judge another for being a stay-at-home wife. Either way, we are who we are and we're out there doing what's best for us and our families. Who are you to judge?

So guess what? I'll tell y'all a few things about me, whether you agree or not. {Isn't this freeing?!}:

  • I hate Lilly Pulitzer. I think those clothes look like they belong on a five-year-old.
  • I'm a Republican. {Obviously.}
  • I hate crafting. Ain't nobody got time for that!
  • We are trying out new churches and no, we will not be there every single time the doors are open. We are looking for something for Sunday mornings and a way to get plugged in with other people in our community.
  • I'm a wine snob. But I drink Black Box Wine
  • I think I'm very overweight and need to lose about 10 pounds. But I hate working out.
  • I can be passive-aggressive, but hate when people are passive-aggressive to me.
  • It drives me crazy when I don't get a thank you note for a gift.
  • I abhor the term, "Thanks for..." when I haven't even done anything for them to thank me yet.
  • I love sweet tea and would drink an entire gallon in one sitting if you'd let me.
  • After I watch a TV show on a time period, era or people I find interesting, I'll Google them until I'm satisfied I know everything about them that I wanted to know.
  • I haven't had a hair cut in about six months. My split ends are out of control.
  • Cleaning is cathartic to me.
So don't judge. You really never know someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. And I know some of y'all haven't walked a mile in my size 8 1/2 giant shoes!

Linen Closet Makeover

Sooo...my linen closet? OUT OF CONTROL!

With yesterday's little holiday {thanks, MLK!} I got a little organized. While I adore days off, they always make me take a long, hard look at my house and do one little bit of organizing. Yesterday's project? My linen closet.

Unfortunately, I didn't take a "before" picture {not sure I'd want y'all to see that anyway...majorly embarrassed!}, but I do have the "afters!"

Here's the full-length of the skinny little linen closet:

And here's the top of it, a little closer up:

...and the bottom half, a little closer up:

This was my inspiration:

Here's what I did:

A. Took everything out of the closet and put it on the floor so I could see all of it.

B. Threw away anything old, past its expiration date {we keep our medicine in here because we have zero cabinet space in the bathroom} and anything I was just over and threw it out.

C. Folded {correctly!} all of our sheets and blankets using this as a guide.

D. Found baskets from around the house {I loooooove baskets!} that would fit on the linen closet shelves. I then took a trip to Home Goods and spent $55 on three baskets for the closet and one to replace the basket I stole from the living room.

E. I arranged our linens in the baskets. For example, sheet sets went into one basket, towels went into another, medicines that we rarely use went into a smaller one, and medicines we use frequently went into another. Then I placed the baskets on the shelves into an order that made sense to us.

*Here's the order from top shelf to bottom shelf:
  • Top shelf: Aprons {because I never use them}; extra toilet paper {in a basket} and paper towels
  • Second shelf: Medicines! The bigger basket includes medicines/items we rarely or seasonally use {e.g. sunscreen, aloe vera, extra toothbrushes, etc.} The smaller organizer holds medicines/items we use frequently {e.g. Claritin, NyQuil, band-aids, etc.}
  • Third shelf: Towels, beach towels and an extra bath mat {in large basket}
  • Fourth shelf: My great-great-grandmother's homemade quilt {that we never use, but I love having} and "smell goods" in a small basket {e.g. Febreze room spray, Bath & Body Works plug-ins}
  • Fifth shelf: Extra pillows
  • Floor: Basket that holds three extra sheet sets {two for the guest bed and one for our bed}

So what do y'all think?

Weekend randomness!!!

My new favorite mask: Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. It's $6-7 and is amazing. {Even Brandon has used it. Ha!}

Don't I look attractive?

Last week's client announcement was insane and I literally consumed more caffeine than I have in months. Got all kinds of cray up in thurr!

PS: Working from said client's windowless conference room was even more cray.
{And my doctor wonders why I'm Vitamin D deficient...}

My office closed at 3 p.m. on Friday and IT WAS THE BEST EVER.

We found these little "cups of joy" {to quote my friend Tracy} at the little Texaco by our house and picked some up before our movie date on Friday night.

I love date nights, especially when they involve carbs and wine. iFratelli + vino + sneaking in wine to the movies = perfect.

We saw "Silver Linings Playbook." Loved. it.

Please don't look at how fat cow-ish I look in this photo {or my lack of make-up, or my clippie on top of my head...}, but please notice how Oliver must sit RIGHT HERE as I'm getting ready. Seriously, this animal is more canine than feline.

We have this little "potty separator" (as I like to call it) and he will jump from the tub {on the right of this photo} to the separator and sit there until I spray my hair. Because, according to my husband, the aerosol hairspray is THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD.

Also, I would just like to say that SNL needs new writers stat. As much as I love Jennifer Lawrence, Saturday's SNL was the worst ever. "Top Chef Dogs," really?

Today is technically a holiday, but guess who's working? Oh right, me

I do, however, have a roast in the Crock Pot, am getting a massage at 4 p.m. and am going to get our Valentines printed! :)

Happy Monday!

Y'all, I am so sorry that I've been so absent. Things in workland have been a bit crazy, and right when I sit down to write, something else happens.

And, I went back to the doctor Friday because my dizziness spells have returned. She was a bit concerned about it and sent me to a neurologist, who also seemed concerned about it. That said, I'm now scheduled for an MRI and an EEG, am on a Vitamin B+12 supplement, have been told to eat more leafy greens and am now tracking my sleeping habits (what time I go to bed; if I wake up any in the middle of the night and if so, what time; what time I wake up; if I am too cold or too hot, etc.).

It's a bit nerve-wracking, so I really would appreciate any prayers, good thoughts, good juju...anything! :)

This little buglet has been a banshee for the past couple of days {read: pooping on my carpet}, but when I was working from home yesterday, he had to be RIGHT HERE on my chest the entire time. Made for an interesting way to email, that's for sure.

Random, but do y'all ever watch "Dateline?" I typically love it -- when Brandon's home. Something about knowing he's there doesn't make me freak out as much.

Last night, he was at a work dinner and I made the mistake of watching it when I was home alone. The following text messages ensued:

Side note: I had just done yoga, which is why I was smelly! :)

Did y'all watch the Golden Globes? We totally thought that this was the best one yet. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler KILLED IT!

I was laughing so hard on the couch...especially the James Cameron joke.

And while everyone looked lovely, Kate Hudson's look {Alexander McQueen} was my favorite. I gasped when she came onstage. This dress was perfect for her.

Again, sorry for the absence, y'all! I'm hoping to be back in normal form by next week.

Have a great week!

Sorry for my almost week-long blog absence, y'all! This week has seriously gotten away from me, but I'll be back tomorrow with a little week recap and some recipes.

Speaking of recipes, I've been looking for some new ones on Pinterest and have actually found some pretty good ones.

{Side note: Sorry to those of you that follow me on Pinterest and I've been blowing up your feed with all my new recipes!}

However, I absolutely abhor looking at a recipe, thinking it looks amazing, and then seeing the ingredients list is more than 10-12 ingredients. Seriously, I find myself looking at my computer and saying:

That is all.

Happy Monday {if there is such a thing}!

Our weekend was really low-key, and it was just what we both needed after the longest three days in the office last week.

Friday evening, I poured myself a glass of wine and watched DVR'd "Law & Order: SVU" over leftovers while Brandon went to the gym. We are such party animals, let me tell you.

Saturday, after a day full of running errands, we went over to Brandon and Kimmie's house for games and drinks. They {re}taught me how to play Chicken Foot, and I swear I'm now obsessed.

Somebody might have had a little too much wine at game night {cough, cough} so she wasn't feeling too hot on Sunday morning.

We just lazed around and picked up the house, and I gave myself a manicure and reread "Something Blue" with a cup of hot tea.

We also watched the two-hour season premiere of "Downton Abbey."

Do y'all watch this show? We are addicted. The history, the costumes, the romance...did I mention the costumes?! If you don't watch it, please for the love of everything, Netflix it. You'll love it, I promise!

Oh Hot Damn, This is my Jam

If you're offended by a bit of language, please don't watch this video.

However, at the risk of sounding like I was born in 1940, I'm going to say that "this song is my new jam."

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Wanz: "Thrift Shop." You're welcome.

House Updates

Just a few little house updates for you today!

As I mentioned, Brandon and I did a lot to the house over Christmas "break."
{Heck, we've done a lot to the house period!}

Anyway, here is the garage improvement:

Since this picture was taken, we cleaned the shelf above.
BUT: Brandon purchased/built that workbench at Home Depot, stained it and has since added a little stool from Wal-Mart and a light above from Home Depot. He also hung the pegboard and the little hang-y things {don't know the actual word!} -- also Home Depot -- that hold extension cords, tools, tape, etc. My parents bought him the Craftsman tool thing to the left from Sears

You'll recall that this was our garage before we moved in {top} and right after we moved in and Epoxy'd the floors {bottom}.

We also finally hung the million and one things on our walls that we've been needing to hang for-EV-er.

Our bedroom was so sad {photo below this one}, as we just threw crap in there when we moved in and didn't really touch it much.

Mirrors above bed: Garden Ridge
Photo above dresser: Garden Ridge; Engineered print: Staples
Photos in dining room: my own, taken in Europe
Diplomas in hallway: Baylor, OBVIOUSLY! Framed at Hobby Lobby

Our sad little bedroom right after we moved in:

My bedroom still isn't exactly the way I want it...yet. Our furniture is mismatched and while I don't want everything to be matchy-matchy, I do want to get matching nightstands and another chest of drawers {it's to the right of me in the above photo} and dresser {ahead of you in this photo} that match. Then, we'll paint the cute dresser that our TV stuff is sitting on, add a little chair and table in the corner of the bedroom, and get another bed bench {I have my eye on one at Home Goods!}.

And yes, that sounds like a lot, but we'll do a little at a time. We're making progress! Slowly but surely.

Happy 2013!

Happy 2013!

I hope you all had a fabulous New Year's Eve ringing it in with the ones that you love.

Our New Year's Eve was perfect and just what we craved: ringing it in together {with Oliver, of course!} at home. It was lovely. I made supper, we had a bottle of red wine and toasted 2013 with a kiss and a champagne toast in my great-grandmother's crystal champagne cupolas.

We're hosting Brandon's parents, his brothers and our sister-in-law for New Year's lunch today, and you can just call me Martha, if you wish. I've got two tenderloins, cabbage, black-eyed peas, cornbread and sweet tea a'brewin' in my kitchen right now.

My mother-in-law is bringing a cobbler {complete with ice cream, of course} and my sister-in-law is bringing a salad...because you have to be healthy today, right?

And after all that fun, we're going to see "Les Miserables," and yes, I will be that person singing in my seat! :)

Brandon and I wish you a very happy, prosperous, healthy and fun 2013.

Let's do this!
