A Very Baylor Day

Today was a very Baylor day, and I loved every minute of it!

I took today off {love those "Summer Days" at work!} and traveled to Waco to see my "big little brother," Royden.

{Of course, I came bearing two dozen chocolate chip cookies!}

It was so, so good to be home and spend the day at my beloved alma mater, which frankly, is the prettiest campus in the State of Texas.

I met Royden at his dorm, which is sooooo "boy." He told me he cleaned for me, which I loved.

Then, we picked up our cousin, Ryan, from the business school and went to George's for lunch. I needed those fried pickles!

After lunch, we dropped Ryan off for his 1:25 p.m. class and ventured over to the bookstore

Royden's dorm room is absolutely freezing, so I bought him some sweatpants, and I got this Sailor Bear T-shirt, which I love!

Of course, no trip to Waco is complete without a frozen Snickers from Common Grounds

I dropped by to see my half-sister, Chelsea, at her cute little apartment before heading out.

I'm so beyond thankful for that place I called home for 3 1/2 years. I met my best friends and my husband, and have a place that I'm proud to say I graduated from. Sic 'Em, Bears!

Finally!

I have been keeping the biggest secret for what feels like forever, so I'm finally glad I can get it off my chest.

I referenced it here in June, and it's been killing me that I haven't been able to tell y'all. BUT:

My cousin {and friend} Rebecca, is pregnant!!!

I'm so, so happy and excited for her and her husband Kris. She's due right around the end of January -- which creepishly isn't that long now! -- and I can't wait to spoil that little baby rotten.

They're not finding out the baby's gender {which is killing me}, but that hasn't stopped me from buying this sweet baby gifts already. I may have to physically restrain myself from purchasing any more.

Congratulations, Kris and Rebecca! We love you!

Today is my Friday. Happy almost-weekend to you!

WILW

Happy Wednesday!

Here's what I'm loving this week:

Our bedding came in! Yay!

We picked this up at World Market this weekend after a tasting there, and it is amazing. Very smooth, rich and doesn't taste wine-y at all...which can get me in trouble!

I got to see my cousin, Robert, last night!

He's in town for flight school {he's training to become a pilot!} and since I needed to borrow his truck to move a piece of furniture, he came over to help us.

He just passed his Multi-Engine Instructor License Test {which is apparently pretty darn difficult to pass}, so we celebrated with my afore-mentioned wine and supper.

Since 95% of my family lives in the Houston area, it was so wonderful to have family in Dallas last night!

Note to self: Never pose this way again. Side angle + oversized sorority T-shirt makes you look huge.

Today is my Thursday. I'm going to Waco on Friday to see my "big little brother," Royden, and take him to lunch. So, so excited to go back "home!"

Happy Hump Day!

Weekend

I saw a tweet recently from Post Grad Problems that said, "When the Sunday evening blues begin at 2 p.m." I feel like I can relate on this rainy, dreary Sunday.

This weekend, we rested. This is our last weekend of actually doing nothing, so we're savoring it.

Friday:
I made a yummy, easy supper, and we relaxed on the couch with wine and watched "Act of Valor."

Brandon thought he'd bake Break & Bake cookies...minus the "break." Thank goodness I walked in the kitchen just as he was about to stick them in the oven!!!

Then, as Oliver was sitting like this at my computer {not staged, I swear!}, we decided to give "him" a Twitter account. You can follow Oliver on Twitter at @oliverkittycat, if you're interested. :)

We're having too much fun with that account!

Saturday:
We slept in and just lounged around in the morning.

We bought our headboard {yay!} and then I went to the grocery store.

We then wandered over to World Market because we noticed they were having a 50% off dining sale. Of course, I'd been lusting after this table and these chairs for-ev-er, so we put them on order {since they were already sold out!} and will pick them up next weekend. Since they were sold out, the manager gave us an extra 10% off the entire purchase. Gotta love that!

Then, we went to Home Depot to purchase paint samples to determine the colors we want and pick out ceiling fans {the current gold and white ones have got to go}. While we were there, we found this set of bar stools that we both just loved. They only had one left {plus the floor model}, and since we needed two, they gave us 10% off the floor model.

We were loving that we got so many deals!

Sunday:
I packed all morning long over a few cups of coffee. Then, I decided to go to TJ Maxx to look for King sheets. They didn't have any that I liked, so I wandered over to Home Goods to check theirs out. I found a great pair, and also this piece of furniture for the living room {which will hold our satellite box thingy, BluRay player, movies, etc.} that was on sale for a great price.

I realize the colors look funky in this picture with the florescent lighting, but I promise it's awesome in person. The iron fixtures are fabulous.

So, I called Brandon and said "Get. up. here. right. now." and he liked it, too, so we bought it!

Things are slowly coming together on this house, and we can't WAIT to close in two weeks!

After our purchase, Brandon went to play golf with his dad and older brother, while I came home and took a hot bath. I'm currently doing laundry, sipping a glass of Pinot and watching Gossip Girl on the Style Network

Happy Sunday!

Menu Friday

Happy Friday! So, so glad the weekend is here.

We have another fun-filled weekend of house stuff to do, so I won't bore you with the details.

Here's what we ate this week:

Saturday:
It poured, so we ordered Piggie Pies Pizza and had some vino.

Sunday:
Leftovers

Monday:
Slow-Cooker Cube Steak + English Peas and Crescent Rolls

This was probably the ugliest dish I've ever made {hence why I'm showing you the ingredient-ses and not the meal}, but it was so tasty. And easy, to boot. The longer you keep this bad boy in the Crock Pot, the more tender the meat becomes; I think ours was in there for about 11 hours -- ha!

I always like to make quick and easy meals on a Monday, because I always think Mondays are lame enough as-is, without having to come home and slave over a hot stove.

Tuesday:

Again, another very easy and yummy meal. It makes a lot, so be prepared.

Wednesday:

I took a note from "It's Complicated" and made Croque Monsieur for the first time, and we weren't disappointed!

It's definitely not a pretty sandwich {I'm sensing a theme here}, but it sure is tasty and relatively easy. The hint of nutmeg and Dijon mustard take this sandwich over the edge, and honestly, you take your first bite and go, "What's in this?"

The risotto is a quick, yummy side dish that was perfect with this sandwich. Sure, I could have done chips or something, but if I'm going to do what is basically a hot ham and cheese sandwich, I really want something else a little heartier on the side.

Thursday:
Leftovers. Brandon had his Fantasy Football "draft" {lame} and I snuggled up with Oliver on the couch to watch my DVR'd "Real Housewives of NYC."

Friday:
Tonight, we're having a night in and I'm making The Pioneer Woman's Fettuccine Alfredo {and adding chicken, of course} and a Caesar salad.

Brandon ordered "Friends with Kids" from Netflix, and I'm stopping to get a bottle of wine on my way home from work.

Happy Weekending!

Victory is Mine!

Well, my husband told me that I couldn't get the Pottery Barn bedding I wanted. And I don't blame him. It's freaking expensive. I look at that $169 price tag and see about five cans of paint...sad that I think that way these days.

But anyway, I found this bedding from West Elm a few weeks ago and fell in love with it. And bonus? It was cheaper! I told Brandon I figured we'd get it, just later on down the road with some Christmas money or something.

So, I've been scouring that website to see if it would go on sale.

And guess what?! IT DID. Today, in fact. For half off!!!

What would have been $205 for the duvet cover, two Euro shams and two monogrammed standard shams, was $123.95 plus shipping and tax. I seriously did a happy dance in my cube.

VICTORY IS MINE!

Now I just have to buy a basic white bedskirt and white sheets. Cross your fingers that those will be on sale, too! :)

Happy Thursday!

WILW

Happy Wednesday! Here's what I'm loving this week:

I saw this on PB's website right after we find out the home was ours, and I knew it was meant to be. We currently have a door knocker on our front door that says, "The Derows," so that is gonna have to change stat.

This came in the mail today {monogrammed with a "W," of course} and I did a little happy dance in my cube.

This little booger and the look he gives me. It's like he's saying, "What? Am I bothering you by laying on you on the couch? Ask me how much I care."

PS: Ignore my shirt that is air drying over the back of my kitchen table. My laundry room is thisbig and has no place to hang things to dry!

Why is this place so darn good?! I love, love their chocolate milkshake flavor mixed with vanilla bean, topped with dark chocolate chips and toffee bits. Yumm-o!

And finally, this guy.

He's been at our {new} house all day long interviewing contractors and getting quotes on popcorn ceiling removal and painting the entire house. Yes, you read that right, entire house.

After each one leaves, he gives me an update call to tell me the pros and cons of each person, the price they quoted and their little "isms."

I love this man.

Happy Wednesday! We're halfway through the week!

Tanning

I'm going to stand on my soapbox for a minute.

I saw this on a car at a stoplight on my way home yesterday. If you can't read that, it says:

"Get Your Vitamin D. Go Tanning."

I wanted to get out of my car, tap on that girl's window and tell her all of the statistics about skin cancer...from a girl who used to tan so much that she looked purple in photos.

Case in point:

Gross, right? And not only gross, expensive.

I grew up in a small town in East Texas that, God bless it, is a little behind the times. Girls still do those skunk-like highlights, do-do curls and...tan. A lot. So I grew up tanning. Well, when my mom would let me, like before prom.

I got so mad at my mom for only letting me tan two or three times a week leading up to prom. She told me it was bad for me, but I didn't listen. I just wanted to be tan.

And if you know me, you know that I am truly my father's child with my pale skin and freckles. I can tan, but only after I burn really badly and keep on tanning.

So I kept doing it. All through high school and my first two years of college. I would even lie about tanning to my mom {when it was clearly obvious that I had!} because I knew it was wrong and knew I shouldn't be doing it. But I just wanted to be tan, because to me, tan was beautiful.

A girl in my high school {who shall remain nameless} said to me once, "Tan fat is prettier than white fat." I don't know why that stuck with me, but it did. So I tanned to get that "fat" tanner. Because it was prettier, right?

Keep in mind that through all of this, my dad was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia. Totally unrelated to skin cancer, but it still scared me. A lot. Especially when I went to M.D. Anderson with he and my mom for one of his appointments when I was home from college from Christmas break one year. Seeing the way my dad looked coming out of giving bone marrow...coupled with the Grey's Anatomy episode where Izzie died because of a brain tumor that developed from metastatic melanoma...did it for me.

I was done tanning.

I stopped, cold turkey. I haven't gone in a tanning bed since, and I never will again.

After my declaration of "No! More! Tanning!", my would-be sister-in-law had moles removed that were caused by sun exposure right before her wedding. She was so upset that she'd have a giant scar across her back that would show in her wedding dress.

Then, my cousin Rebecca had spots moved and has a nasty scar on her back.

My aunt has had a crazy amount of moles removed.

My husband had a spot removed.

I was done.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

And not to beat a dead horse, but here are some statistics:

-Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States.

-About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun.

-Those who make four visits to a tanning salon per year can increase their risk of melanoma by 11 percent, and their risk of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma by 15 percent.

-People who use tanning beds are 2.5 times more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

So please, please, please remember to wear sunscreen when you're in the sun {and on your face EVEN if you're wearing make-up}, get checked head-to-toe by your doctor for any moles or suspicious bumps on your skin, and by all means, DO NOT TAN IN A TANNING BED!

Pale is beautiful...all the movie stars are! Why, you ask? Because you don't get wrinkles.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Okay, I'm off my soapbox now.

Monday Musings

Because it's Monday, a list post.

I am having a bad hair day today. Bad hair day + cute outfit = annoying.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Those pumpkin oatmeal peanut butter muffins? Y'all. So filling. They were the best breakfast this morning. And for someone who is usually starving by 10:30 a.m.? I think I've found a winner.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I'm taking next Friday off. {Hallelu-yer.} I'm going to see my "big little brother," who just started college at Baylor today. I can't wait to see him and live vicariously through him for a few hours. :)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My husband is taking Wednesday off to sit at our empty new house and interview contractors about painting, removing popcorn ceilings and replacing an electric range with a gas one...all day. He literally has back-to-back appointments from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with a little lunch break, of course. But honestly? I can't tell you what a relief it has been that he's taken the charge on this. I love him so much!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Speaking of our house, the paint color is a beige-y color, and we noticed yesterday when comparing paint that it's got a pink hue to it. Honestly?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I had a little pity party on Friday night. As in, I had two glasses of wine and full-on cried after reading a "praise" e-mail from my boss to our entire office...that I was left out of. I busted my butt all week and then was left out of that e-mail. And it wasn't even that I wasn't recognized. It was that I worked so hard and felt like no one noticed.

Moving on.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I can't believe Labor Day weekend is next weekend. Seriously? The summer flew by.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Do people even use cameras anymore? I thought I'd lost mine for so long and found it when we were packing. However, after not using it for so long, I feel like my iPhone suffices. Maybe I'll use it again when we have kids.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

This time of the year always makes me want to be back at Baylor. All 3.5 years I took 8 or 9 a.m. classes and was finished with school at lunchtime. I loved that I had my entire afternoon to do homework, play around and work a little bit. What I would give to go back to that time in my life!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

I heard Prince Harry was in Vegas this weekend. Who knew that Vegas was an attractive destination for not only Europeans, but a prince?

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My office is so quiet today, even for a Monday. Makes me want a nap.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Four more days until the weekend. I think I can, I think I can.

Weekend.

Happy Sunday!

I can't believe we're already here {again}. The weekends are flying by lately!

Friday:
We had a few glasses of wine and supper at our local country club {it's within walking distance...gotta love that!} and came home and crashed.

Saturday:
I slept in until almost 10 a.m. {whaaat?!} and we lounged on the couch and watched Tin Cup. Well, Brandon watched the movie. I cleaned.

Later, we went over to the house to measure some things and get our security system set up. My mother- and father-in-law came over to look at the house, then they left and we went to pick out a King mattress.

Side note: I love my husband so much, but I need my space when I sleep. When we first got married, it was all, "Oh! Let's cuddle!" Now I'm all, "Get on your side of the bed before I smack you." I am so looking forward to that King bed in a few weeks!!!

Then, as we were driving home, a Flash Flood watch happened in .5 seconds {welcome to Texas} and we ventured into Sherwin Williams to get paint chips...looking like drowned rats. We picked up the paint chips, and I was planning to brave the Flash Flood and go to the grocery store because WE HAD NOTHING, but Brandon said, "Brittany, I swear. I will get you anything you want for supper if you'll just save the grocery store for tomorrow." {Totally reminded me of Three Men and a Baby when Peter says, "I'll give you $1,000 if you do it."}

I took him up on his offer, and we had Piggie Pies pizza and wine for supper. And it sure was tasty.

Since Brandon gets a 40% discount on Whirlpool appliances {and an extra 10% off this weekend + no tax}, we purchased our fridge over pizza and wine. You know you're old when you're excited about a french door refrigerator.

Sunday:
My grandparents were driving through Dallas on their way home from Angel Fire, N.M., so we met them for lunch at Mi Cocina. My cousin, Robert, is in the area for flight school, so he joined us, too. It was so great seeing my family!

We had lunch, then took them to see our house. They loved it, which made me love it even more.

After lunch, Brandon went to Home Depot to look at more paint; I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond and the grocery store; and then we came home and watched Armageddon on TV.

We ate leftovers for supper, and then I got in the fall mood {thanks a lot, Pinterest!} and made my own version of Pumpkin Oatmeal Peanut Butter muffins for us to eat for breakfast this week. My house smells amazing!

We spent the rest of the evening getting ready for the week {packing lunches, ironing clothes, laundry} and being lazy.

Have a great week, y'all!

The Bed Debacle

I never realized that it would be this difficult to find a bed.

My husband, God love him, is really into providing input for this bed. It cracks me up. I grew up with a Dad that would walk in a room and not notice that my Mom completely rearranged its entire contents. My father-in-law is the same way. But Brandon? While he doesn't care too much about certain aspects of the house, he does truly care about this bed. And frankly? I can't blame him.

His signature statement the past few weeks has been, "This new master bedroom will be our sanctuary."

We currently sleep in what is technically the guest bedroom in our little apartment; a move we made because the supposed master bedroom had only one interior wall, leaving us with dreadful noises of birds, people, {loud} cars starting in the morning and just general "outside" noise. So to say this room is anything but a sanctuary would be spot on. It's near the back of the house, backing up to the side of our neighbor's house. So we're hoping it'll be dark and quiet...just the way we like to sleep.

Our current bed has a footboard, which Brandon hates, because he's tall enough to just hit it in the middle of the night. Our bed squeaks on his side, meaning I hear him get up {every. single. time} in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. And he has a bad back {at 26, I know} and needs a better mattress.

So! We're on the hunt for all of those things.

At first, I was really into this type of bed, because it felt really "master-y" to me. But the more that I saw upholstered headboards/beds on Pinterest {complete with my love, nailhead trim}, I knew that that's what I really wanted.

Keep in mind that our master bedroom will be painted a dark gray {kind of like this}, and I'm pining after this bedding. I wanted the bed to bring a bit of lightness to the room and not have a wood color, which I think would make it feel very dark. Keep in mind that I'm planning for white sheets, a chunky cable knit throw on the end of the bed and possibly even a lighter-colored chaise lounge {the same linen color as the headboards} in the corner.

So without further adieu, here are the beds/headboards we're considering. Can you guess which one is my favorite and which one is Brandon's?

Happy Wednesday! I guess we can say that this is my "WILW." :)

Weekend

Wow, I can't believe that Monday is already almost over!

Friday:
We went to Uncle Julio's for supper with our friends Brandon and Kimmy. We had a lot of fun and left so stuffed!

Saturday:
I didn't really sleep late, which is always a bummer. Brandon got up before me and had {thankfully} made a pot of coffee, so we lounged on the couch together with our respective cups of coffee and watched Mitt Romney announce Paul Ryan as his VP candidate. So excited for November!

Later, I ran to get a car wash, went to CVS {I got $27 worth of stuff for $9! Love their coupons!} and to the grocery store. After that, Brandon and I went to The Dump to look at their area rugs and to Home Goods near our new house to browse.

I made an early supper, then Brandon and I both got massages, which were so awesome.

We came home to watch TV, and then crashed early.

Side note: This is where Oliver likes to sit while I'm watching TV. He's soooo protective of me, which I think is hilarious. I just love his little face resting on my pillow!

Sunday:
We woke up and got a jump start on packing up the apartment! We close in three weeks and are planning to start taking some boxes over there on that day. So, we came up to my office to grab the 15 boxes that our IT guy had saved for me {thanks, Mike!}, then stopped at Office Depot for $30 worth of bubble wrap. Then, we came home and started packing!

I never realized just how long it would take to bubble wrap and pack all of my crystal, china and breakable things! Brandon, in the meantime, purged our DVD/BluRay collection, took things off the walls for me and took a ton of stuff out to the dumpster for me.

It doesn't look like a lot in this picture, but those boxes are two rows deep, with some on the other side of that Tupperware box that contains all of my Christmas decorations.
{And that ugly pelican painting? Brandon painted it at Painting with a Twist and refuses to part with it. It was hanging in his closet at the apartment. I think it might get thrown away "accidentally on purpose."}

And even though I feel like I'm living in an insane asylum with the white walls, I smile every single time I pass this row of boxes. It's a happy-sad smile, really. Sad to be leaving everything we know and our "home," but really excited to be starting our new adventure.

It's on to more packing for this girl tonight!

Menu Friday

Happy {Menu} Friday! I haven't done one of these in a while, so I thought I'd bring it back!

Friday:

What is better than a one-pot wonder?! The secret to this pasta is the noodles {I used whole-wheat} are boiled in chicken broth - yummy! I also added chicken for Brandon.

Saturday:
We had pizza because of Brandon's company lake party.

Sunday:
My great-grandmother, Memmie's, Shrimp Casserole + garlic bread

Since I use Memmie's recipe card for this, I don't have a link for you. But it's similar to this recipe

Monday:
Chicken Marsala Casserole + Garlic Bread & Asparagus

This was good, but I thought it needed a bit more "oomph." Next time I'll add a bit more salt a few seasonings.

Tuesday:

The biggest thing to note here is that I added chicken for my protein-loving husband and used whole-wheat rotini. And, I cannot reiterate enough to follow the recipe and use the goat cheese log, not the crumbled stuff. I used the crumbled stuff this time {because it was on sale} and could tell a huge difference.

Wednesday:
Cooking Light's Hamburger Stroganoff + English Peas & Garlic Bread

This is always a good, easy staple in our house. I do always have to add a bit more salt to it, but it's very tasty and surprisingly quick. I always use wheat egg noodles for this recipe.

Thursday:

These are always an easy option for the end of the week...when I don't feel like cooking at all. Surprisingly, I let this be our one meatless meal of the week {just don't tell Brandon!} and always serve it with a nice Corona Light...and pretend we're back in Playa Mujeres. :)

Tonight we're having Tex-Mex again, as we're meeting one of Brandon's friends, Brandon {it gets confusing, trust me} and his fiancĂ©, Kimmy, at Uncle Julio's in the 'burbs. I love, love "Uncle Who's" (as we call it) margaritas and salsa!

Happy, Happy Friday!
