Bernie

Have y'all seen the movie "Bernie?"

It's a dark comedy featuring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Matthew McConaughey. Normally I don't like dark comedies, but this one was hilarious...and probably more so because it's set in East Texas where I grew up. Carthage, specifically, which is a little under two hours north of Livingston.

I was just'a singing the hymns featured in the film, laughing at their East Texas references to things and frankly, it made me miss home a little bit!

Brandon added this to our Netflix queue upon a recommendation from my grandfather, and we were not disappointed.

Anyway, I'm not going to ruin the movie for you, but I did have to share my favorite quote from the movie, which my Dad and I were laughing so hard at yesterday on the phone that I found it online and e-mailed it to him this morning with the subject line, "Happy Friday!"

“Carthage is in East Texas and that’s totally different from the rest of Texas which could be five different states, actually. You got your West Texas out there with a bunch of flat ranches. Up north you got them Dallas snobs with their Mercedes. And then you got Houston, the 'Carcinogenic Coast' is what I call it, all the way up to Louisiana. Then down south, San Antonio, that’s where the Tex meets the Mex, like the food. And then in Central Texas you got the People’s Republic of Austin with a bunch of hairy-legged women and liberal fruitcakes. 'Course, I left out the Panhandle and a lot of people do, but…{silence}. Carthage, this is where the South begins. This is life behind the Pine Curtain and, truth be known, it’s a good place.”

So, Happy Friday to you! Have you seen Bernie? If not, please rent it this weekend! You won't be disappointed.
